Community Tree Planting Initiative
In 2015, the Dunmore East Woods & Park Trust, working in partnership with Dunmore East Tidy Towns, undertook a major community tree planting initiative to strengthen and diversify the woodland for future generations. Through the generous support of Coillte, approximately 700 young native trees were donated to the Trust. Community planting days were organised throughout March and May, bringing together volunteers of all ages to help establish the next generation of woodland. Species planted included Silver Birch, Alder and Mountain Pine, carefully selected to enhance the woodland’s biodiversity and long-term resilience.
A Community Effort
The planting days were a wonderful example of local people working together for a shared purpose. Volunteers gave their time, energy and enthusiasm, helping to plant hundreds of young trees across selected areas of the woodland, including Madman’s Wood.
The success of the initiative was made possible through the support of local volunteers, Dunmore East Tidy Towns, Coillte and the Trust’s committee, all sharing the common goal of protecting and enhancing the woodland.
Growing a Woodland for Tomorrow
When people walk through the Woods today, few would notice the hundreds of trees planted during this initiative. That is often the nature of woodland conservation — its greatest successes happen quietly and reveal themselves over many years rather than overnight.
Those small saplings are now becoming established trees, helping to replace ageing woodland, increase biodiversity and ensure that future generations will continue to enjoy a healthy, thriving woodland. The project perfectly reflects the Trust’s long-term approach to stewardship: investing today in improvements whose full benefits may not be seen for decades.
