Lacey’s Wood Trail
The Lacey’s Wood Project will transform an existing informal woodland path into a safe, sustainable and accessible walking trail while protecting the unique natural environment of Lacey’s Wood.
The project will upgrade approximately 322 metres of existing woodland trail to Grade 3 recreational trail standards, making it accessible to a much wider range of users while preserving the woodland’s character. Works include installation of a durable natural trail surface, drainage improvements, raised trail sections to protect tree roots, a low-level recycled plastic boardwalk through wet ground, improved entrances, fencing, seating, signage and interpretation.
The design has been developed to minimise environmental impact, protect mature trees and biodiversity, and provide a high-quality recreational facility that can be enjoyed by local residents and visitors of all ages for many years to come.
Provisions have also been made within the project plan for additional planting and tree replacement in this woods.
Progress So Far (as of July 2026)
Significant preparatory work has already been completed to ensure the project is environmentally responsible and construction-ready.
- Completion of a comprehensive arboricultural survey covering all trees within the project area, identifying tree condition, health, monitoring requirements and any necessary management works.
- Independent arboricultural assessment undertaken to ensure the trail design follows a low-impact approach that protects woodland ecology, tree root systems and the natural landscape.
- Preparation of a detailed trail construction specification, including drainage design, raised pathways, boardwalk sections, entrance improvements and visitor infrastructure.
- Construction methods developed in accordance with recognised best practice for tree protection and woodland conservation during construction.
- Tender documentation completed and the project prepared for construction, with works designed to use small machinery and hand tools where necessary to minimise disturbance within the woodland.
