Woodland Path Improvement Programme
One of the Trust’s most significant infrastructure projects in recent years was the comprehensive improvement of approximately 3.5 kilometres of woodland paths, making the Woods safer, more accessible and more enjoyable throughout the year. This project was fully funded by the Trust.
What was delivered?
- Cleaning and repairing existing drainage systems.
- Installing new drainage in areas prone to flooding.
- Widening sections of pathway where required.
- Repairing steps throughout the woodland.
- Applying a fresh stone surface to the woodland trail network.
The work was carried out by Crispin Roche, Dunmore East, whose local knowledge of the woodland ensured the improvements were completed with minimal impact on the surrounding environment.
The John Michael’s Entrance
One section of the path just inside the John Michael’s Entrance had long been prone to flooding during periods of heavy rainfall. In wet weather, water would collect on the trail, creating muddy conditions that made this popular entrance difficult to use.
With the generous support of Circol ELT, the affected section was resurfaced to improve drainage and provide a more durable walking surface while retaining the natural character of the woodland.
The improvement has been a great success. Even through the past two particularly wet winters of 2025–2026, the path has remained accessible, eliminating the persistent mud and standing water that had previously been a regular feature and allowing everyone to use this path in all seasons.
